Choosing a Web Design Company

by Tony Hill

Deciding to commission the build of a new website for your business is a decision that's not to be made hastily. Unlike habitual purchases, redesigning and developing your corporate online presence is an exercise that should be value-guided and carefully considered. Consequently, take the time to establish your goals, research, evaluate, compare and research, evaluate and compare again.

- Step One: Establish your requirements -

At the outset, it's useful to ask yourself and your colleagues why you want or need a new website and to fully understand what it is that you're looking to achieve. Are you, for example, looking to sell online? Are you looking to showcase your products and do these products change on a regular basis? Are you looking recreate or emphasise your brand? Who are your target market and industry competitors?

It's crucial to fully establish and understand your project objectives; if you don't know where you're going, how will you get there? Understanding and answering these questions will also help you to establish criteria for choosing the right web design company.

- Step Two: Research -

When it comes to choosing the right web design company for your website, it's crucial to shop around. There is an abundant of web design companies in the marketplace, each catering for a range of clients across a variety of industries. If your business operates in a niche market, it may be useful to see if there's a web design company that caters for your industry sector. Ask to see client testimonials and whether it's okay to contact past clients for references.

Be sure to ask further important questions such as whether your website will be entirely bespoke or not. The visual and user-friendly impact that you're likely to gain from a bespoke web design is likely to far exceed that of a standard template design that's used by hundreds of other companies across the web. However, you must weigh up the benefits of a bespoke solution against the cost of implementing something customised to you and your business.

- Step Three: Evaluate -

Take your time to read through each of the website proposals you receive - read them twice if you like. Although you may have a tendency to skim read and flick through to the price page, refrain from doing so - each proposal will formulate different suggestions and the prices are not directly comparable. Use the proposals to clarify what it is you're looking to achieve and shortlist the handful of companies that you feel will best help you achieve this.

Ensure you gain a revised proposal and quotation based on any new requirements.

- Step Four: Compare Prices -

Ensure you're aware of the full conditions of your shortlisted web designer's costs. Some may change by the hour depending on the time and resources required, whilst others may change a fixed price. When you're aware of their pricing structures and payment conditions, you can begin the tough task of comparing proposals and prices. Ask colleagues and business partners for their opinions too - after all, it's a decision not to be made hastily.

Collate all feedback and you'll undoubtedly now be in a position to appoint the right company for your project.
