Understanding SEO Articles: Why Offsite Content Helps You

by Christine Harrell

Most businesses understand the need for good copy. Its relationship with search engine placement is pretty straightforward: crawlers spot the keywords they're looking for on your website, they recognize that your site is relevant, and so you're ranked more highly. When compared with that process, SEO articles, which aren't put up on your site and don't even promote your company directly, can seem quite superfluous. However, when you dig under the surface of what they actually do for search engine placement, the value of these published pieces becomes easier to understand.

The Life Cycle Of An Article

Every published piece starts out as an idea. The goal is to share some kind of unique experience or idea with others who are in your field, or people who might want to learn about your field. From there, the next step is two write about it. This is best done by someone with experience planning and writing informational pieces. If you don't have this experience, it's easy for the piece to turn rambling and lose a lot of its educational punch. Finally, once it is written, it is ready to be uploaded. You will add an about the author section, which includes information about your company, and then you'll submit it to sites across the web. Once it's published, it stays out there interminably, always able to be viewed.

Benefit #1: Market Authority

Whenever you publish something, you prove that you have knowledge in that area. If you didn't know about your subject, how could you talk about it? Especially if you're providing very new or cutting edge information, your expertise will quickly circulate within your own industry. Plus, customers and others who are interested in learning more about your work but are not insiders themselves will come to see you as an educational first point of contact, further enhancing your image.

Benefit #2: Search Engine Placement

If published in the right place, your offsite content has the added benefit of boosting your rankings. The process is simple: if your work is accepted for publication on the right websites, you'll get the opportunity to link back to your website from the about the author section. These backlinks are very valuable for search engine placement; along with keywords and onsite optimization, they form the basis for your site's success.

Benefit #3: Consumer Education

A well written piece can help people understand how your product or service benefits them. Especially if your field is somewhat obscure, it's often difficult for the average consumer to really make sense of it. Your work can help them comprehend it and educate them about your particular company at the same time.

Benefit #4: Wider Distribution

Both of the benefits above are guaranteed even if your work is not particularly popular. However, if you're able to write something outstanding, it will take on a life of its own. It will be widely circulated and shared amongst people within your field and outside of it. Every time it is shared you'll get people exploring your website and learning who you are, which is always good for business.
