A rebate is an amount of money which is reduced, returned or refunded on purchases or financial contributions. It's popularly used as a sales promotion by marketers, who use these incentives to push product or service sales. Mail-in rebates are most commonly used for these purposes, where a consumer can send off a coupon, receipt or barcode in order to receive a rebate. This will usually depend on the specific product purchased, the time and even place of the purchase. They can be offered by retailers and manufacturers.

Sometimes rebate forms and receipts can be printed by cashiers at the point of purchase; otherwise online retailers can make the form available for download. In some cases the rebate is available immediately upon purchase, which means it will be referred to as an instant rebate. Some of these schemes even offer several different pay-out options for customers, including cash, card payments or vouchers.

Rebates are popular in retail in America, and there are a number of reasons why they work so well for them. When consumers provide proof of purchase through receipts or other documentation they also need to provide proof of ID and their full contact information. Names, addresses and methods of payment are all useful pieces of data to these organisations, helping them to understand consumer behaviour and re-market to them at a later date.

When prices increase, customers tend to react negatively. Rebates help retailers offer extra financial incentives to customers, stimulating sales growth. Rebates have proved popular with deal hunting consumers, especially in the purchasing of technology. It might take a certain degree of time and effort on the consumer's part, including understanding the offers, completing forms and sending letters, receipts or other documentation off, but a great deal of money can be saved on expensive items.

The latest development in rebate marketing is cashback sites. While most cashback sites take a proportion of rebates, some of them are now offering 100% rebates to customers, looking for their income from banner advertising and other avenues. These sites negotiate deals with retailers and then pass them straight on to customers. It's a competitive market as many cashback sites struggle to provide the very best deals.

Some cash back sites even offering over 100% cashback offers, actually paying consumer to spend money through them. Next time you're making a big purchase, perhaps you should check out these cashback sites and see how much you could save.

Bill Weston writes on a number of subjects including cash back sites, cashback and cash back.
