Working in betting doesn't have to mean working in a high street bookmaker, surrounded by small red pens, betting slips and disappointed punters. More and more people are betting, gambling and playing games online. Big prizes, advanced bets, innovative game play and convenience can all be blamed. It's not always easy to nip into a bookmakers, bingo hall, race track or casino, so an increasing number of people are choosing to take part in these activities from the comfort from their own home, using just a computer, a credit card and an internet connection.

So betting jobs aren't just about processing betting slips, accepting payments and dishing out winnings, jobs in betting cover a range of different skills and disciplines, so why not consider embarking on a career in this growing industry?

IT & Technical

Obviously betting websites need to be coded and maintained, protected and tested. IT professionals and programmers are all needed to bring this sort of project together, often working closely with creatives and business development managers on their objectives, and ensuring that the system and network are working efficiently and securely.

Designers

What makes online betting so attractive is the innovative game play and design which is often used. Web and graphic designers are highly valued in online betting, as many managers understand that usability, functionality and great design can be the difference between having a popular site which people love, and an average site which doesn't excite anyone.

Financial & Administrative

There are lots of administrative and financial jobs for betting companies and websites, to help process and analyse financial data, manage accounts, suppliers, partners and affiliates. Good financial management is at the core of any betting business.

Customer Services & Support

Just because the activity takes place over the internet, it doesn't mean that online betting companies offer no customer support. Good customer helplines and online chat can help customers to keep spending, so often betting companies will look for recruits with a background in customer service so they can help to advice and support customers with their decisions.

Marketing, PR & Advertising

Online betting is extremely competitive, as you might be able to tell from aggressive advertising campaigns in prime time and place. They tend to spend a lot on PR, marketing and advertising, as this is a key part of attracting the right audiences to betting games and websites. Jobs in this field include SEO and PR, which in itself can represent creative content development, promotion, social media marketing and outreach.

Bill Weston writes on a number of subjects including betting jobs, the games industry and games testing jobs.
