Website Fundamentals

by Robert P. James

Search engine optimization, or SEO as it is typically known, is discussed at length across the Information superhighway. Web teachers, Internet marketeers, discussion forums and specialization blogs website are all flush with SEO recommendations and opinions.

The chances are that, if you have made the decision that you want to build your own Internet site and you have done some online looking for hints and information, you will have stumbled upon a good few SEO commentaries and guides.

Therefore, what is search engine optimisation and, at the same time as the first few stages that you set about on the journey to emerging as a Data highway aficionado, should you be worrying about it?

SEO, is the method of fashioning your web site's pages as compelling as conceivable to Google and the other search engines. If you succeed in this undertaking, then the likes of Google will want to position your Internet site high up in their search result rankings - and that will mean extra targeted visitors for your web site.

If SEO was a simple operation then you would very quickly have your website high up in the search engine standings. Having said that, this is normally not the case.

In general, the search engine standard is to only show the top 10 results on their opening results page. Consequently, if your Internet site is targeted at a competitive market segment, there will be hundreds if not thousands of competing Internet sites for those few desired front page spots.

To further complicate matters, the protocols whereby search engines assess the stature of any website are forever fluctuating. By and large, Google modifies the cyphering its formula is founded upon over 300 times yearly. So, anybody engaged in on-going SEO functions is focusing on a continually switching objective.

So, for most people, SEO is an unremitting online battle.

But nevertheless, before you even begin to look at any serious effort at SEO, there are a trio of fundamental concepts that should require your attention first. Meet these and your web site will start off in positive stead.

To start with, decide what you wish from your Internet site before you actually start laying out and stocking it with content.

If you wish to create a place on the web to further your hobby or interest, and are not honestly afraid how other everyday people or the search engines view your efforts, then go full steam ahead. You will experience few complications. Bask the ride!

Then again, if you are looking to attain a second source of income from your Internet presence, or even hoping to replace your main employment through your online earnings, then set in motion some market research before you embark upon your journey.

The widespread lack of prior market research never ceases to flabbergast me. Somehow, people appear to get fixated on a singular idea that they envisage will make them instant financial successes and, from that point on, they are liable to allow their thoughts run wild.

There is no reason for forging a better dinosaur trap after all the dinosaurs have long since departed this worldly stage. Likewise, do you really suppose that an Internet site aimed at offering CDs is going to produce much income in the current world of downloaded mp3s and iTunes?

Likewise, if you design a website selling carbonated waters online, do not expect to take many orders. When people are thirsty, they want their thirst quenched now - not 48 hours later courtesy of DHL!

Your second concern should be to ensure that your web site answers a desire that your visitors have.

Make you content helpful, educational, intriguing and entertaining. Provide pragmatic answers to day to day problems. Provide your visitor with the indulgence of uncovering something new. Just remember, a happy reader will more likely social bookmark your Internet site and return again. And, if your reader is happy, then Google is happy since Google's main aim is to yield lists of Internet sites that surfers will want to click on.

However, first-rate, unique content is not much use unless people can discover and navigate it easily. You can aid this by ensuring that your website has an intuitive menu system. Regularly check for broken or incorrect links. As a final point, you can install and maintain a simple to find web site search function.

Lastly, you should try to remember to focus on quality.

Quality of content. Quality of focus. Quality of punctuation and prose. Quality of hosting platform.

So many web sites today are stuffed with hundreds of ill-focused, vaguely written webpages that fail to give any extensive information. These Internet sites are scarcely more than web fluff; a collection of Internet tumbleweed that serves no purpose other than to electronically litter the Cyberworld.

Other Internet sites comprise of pages that are permeated with spelling and punctuation errors. They are not checked - and, not a good persuasion for deterring readers from journeying elsewhere.

There are also websites that are hosted on freebie, or cut-price platforms, that take forever to respond to a user's request. In fact, keepers of these Internet sites will likely find that their visitors can hit the exit key quicker than the time it takes to load the webpages.

Therefore, always regard your Internet site from your readers' viewpoint. If they think it is slow reacting, poorly written, error strewn trivia then that is precisely what your website is.

Remember, designing and marketing a new Internet site is not an overnight endeavor. Conceive it with care. Treasure and cultivate it with tender love. Then, presently, you will have a recurrent stream of website visitors and your website will be ready for some businesslike search engine optimisation.
