It's best to think of your website as a newborn baby during its first couple of years online. A young website requires an exponentially greater degree of effort to produce the same results online as a domain several times its age. Building up your website's link popularity is guaranteed to get it up and walking much faster than businesses providing the bare minimum of nourishment to their baby sites.

The age of a domain is a significant factor in the authority or clout of a website. One of the reasons why the age of a domain has such a major impact on a website's performance capabilities is because of the regularity of scamming, fraudulent, illegal, unethical, and just plain virus-laden websites that pop up online. By including the age of a domain as a priority value in website grading, search engines are able to significantly limit the online presence of fly-by-night websites and applications with malicious intentions such as scraping personal information for identity fraud purposes or collecting credit card numbers and then disappearing from the Web without making good on purchased products or services.

Take a proactive approach to your website's growth and performance capabilities through link building. Link building boosts your link popularity, also referred to as your website's reputation, which augments your website's authority and helps it achieve higher page rankings. High page ranks are key to the coveted ability to drive more traffic to your website. Link popularity is largely calculated based on the number of websites that link to your site (i.e. inbound links or backlinks). However, link popularity is not strictly determined by the quantity of your website's backlinks. Additional variables that are highly valued by search engines in their link popularity calculations include: overall quality (e.g. usefulness, accuracy of information, design and ease of indexing), domain age, PageRank (PR), and trust value of the websites that link to your website.

A word of caution: While these variables have the potential to ignite your website's link popularity, they can also work against your website's reputation. Failure to adhere to the top values used to calculate link popularity can incur some hefty penalties that might set your website's online presence back further than when you started. Therefore, if you don't plan on investing a solid effort in building quality links then you're probably better off not doing any backlinking at all.

For an extra boost, try to get backlinks from aged websites with high PageRanks. It will probably be more difficult to get these types of links because websites with high page authorities and PageRanks typically feature more stringent standards and monitoring, but the potential boost makes it worth the effort. Many businesses have been able to successfully address this issue by contacting the website or blog administrator and asking to exchange links: "I'll link to your website if you link to mine." If the administrator isn't willing to do reciprocal links and link to your website you can also try offering to write a free full-length blog post in return for a backlink. Besides, you should always maintain a genuine desire to help others throughout your marketing efforts anyway.
