As i have said before in some of my previous articles it can be a little daunting a task to get your blog/website noticed in the large ocean of the internet but one way to get it noticed is to make people see it when they search for it in a search engine. While this is not the only way for people to see your website it is one of the most common ways in which people look for information online.
To begin with i will tell you a few things about what search engines look for when they judge the rankings of a web page when someone searches for a particular topic. Firstly they are looking at whether the words that the searcher typed in are in your site at all. This is crucial because obviously if the site is not related to the search then the search engine is not going to display it. Now you can not cater for every search on google this would be far to hard so your best choice is to use Googles keywords tool to find a particular target search. The internet has been around for such a long time now that all of the easy searches are taken up by much bigger websites and so you are very unlikely to get onto the first page of google with those. So for example if i put the word football into Googles keyword tool it tells me that 124 million searches were done on that word last month. You are not going to be able to compete with that so a better idea would be to target a 'long tailed keyword' or if you like a search with more words in it. So to give another example about football the search 'football on tv' only had 18,000 searches last month. Now that number is not as impressive but you will have more chance of being spotted by searchers if you use the right techniques with this as there will be less competition.
Now you have chosen what keywords to target you need to 'point' your website at that search. Several ways to do that are to name your website after that search. This can be a problem if .com already taken but you can always choose one of the other extensions such as .org and .net. If you have a blog then these are slightly harder to get to the top of the search engine rankings. Although its not impossible if you can afford it the best thing to do would be to get a domain name.
Next try and add the targeted keywords into the content of your website. I would recommend that if you can manage it 1-3% of your content should contain these keywords. This shows Google that you have alot of relevant content.
Finally you want as many links back to your website all over the web. this means getting the link back on forums and other peoples blogs and web pages. Google tracks all of these and this helps to show that people are interested in your website and so makes it more important. This also has the pleasant side effect of more advertising for your webpage all over the internet.
That should be enough to get you started but if you want to know more right now please visit my blog at www.moneyin15minutes.co.uk Thank you.
